I enjoyed Yahtzee's video review of Super Smash Bros Brawl over at the escapist magazine, gave me plenty of material to use on my brother who adores the game. I just find it a little lacking in the technical side of things, something Yahtzee picks up on when he rants about button bashing.

I'm 14....and compared to you guys....I suck I get a good allowance, do less chores a week than you guys did in a day [because I don't get much chores anyway] and have yet to earn from a paper round.

It's good to see that you've taken it all as 'inspiration', rather than being told what to do. Furthermore, you'll better appreciate the things you get with your hard-earned cash and be less likely to have the 'easy come easy go' attitude that so many have when it gets handed to them on a platter.

My eight year old came up to me last month. She says: "Dad, I need some money."

In my mind I'm pretty upset. My wife and I don't use credit and we've tried to instill in our kids that hard work reaps success . . and here I am about to go off on my beautiful daughter because somewhere I have failed. I'm really more upset with myself.

She continues, "So are there any chores I can do around the house to earn it?"

I took her out for ice-cream before I found some work for her.

My oldest does the same. She has music she want to buy she says "Are there any chores I can do". Makes me feel good. I did something right.

Good for both of you! I 'hired' my nine year old to wash my Company car every two weeks. He makes money to buy his Nintendo DS games and whatever else he wants to spend it on.

The bonus is that, since it is his own hard earned money, he considers every purchase he makes carefully to decide if it is something he really wants or not.

Maybe it was different when I was young ... worked in a plant nursery at 14 laying sod and unloading trucks. By 15, I was laying wood floors at the local roller rink.

Not to mention all the yards I mowed, odd jobs, etc. before I was even 14.

Yep, started working cutting lawns when I was 9, progressed to picking vegetables for a farmer and delivering newspapers every day when I was 14, and working in a gas station when I was 16. I never asked my parents for money, ever.

it was a suggestion. Suggestions can be acted upon or not, you actually have a choice.

Yup... you can blame do-gooder lobbyists and government for that. If they're not telling parents that they have no parental rights and/or responsibilities any more, they're instilling far too much expectation in modern-day kids so they think everything is a right rather than a privilege... that there's no effort or responsibility attached to acquiring anything they want.

I understand and support DRM as long as it doesn't interfere with honest folks using software
Spore is a game . . games are not real. There are more immediate concerns about games topics and functionality that who made the world.

Nobody is telling you what to do... rather, giving advice as to how you can realise your dreams sooner...

When I was 15, I had a paper round; mowed lawns and did whatever odd jobs I could get to earn extra money for things I wanted... and during school holidays I worked for my father and uncle as a plasterers labourer 5 days a week. Bloody hard work, yes, but I wouldn't trade those days for anything...

Oh, and the allowance... I didn't get one! What I got was earned off my own back. My parents would pay me for contributions/efforts to the family, etc... which was fair because nobody got something for nothing and everyone benefited.

Get a couple of paper rounds or something. I depise that fact that, as a 37 year old with two kids, I am about to use this phrase, but "when I was your age" I delivered two free local newspapers. Made about 20 quid a week. Six months of that, $80 a month, will score you a fair old rig. I have a six year old Dell here that only has a graphics card upgrade (GeForce 6) and half a gig of ram, and it runs Half-Life 2 just fine.

As for Securom, storm in a teacup. A lot of folk who whine about DRM don't truly understand what DRM really means and how long it's been being used. If EA were using Starforce, I would NOT be buying it AT ALL. Securom is the much lesser of two evils. I'm more concerned with stuff like the activation in Mass Effect. (Though from what I've read they're dumping that now due to consumer uproar.)

UK prices are pretty damn high for PC parts. Minimum good spec you're looking at is around 450GBP.

At least here in Finland, you can get a job delivering papers or something at that age. Anyway you can get a semi-decent desktop without a monitor for 300€, and you can propably get something better second-hand. If you can get a temporary job, it shouldn't be that hard to get that kind of money.

I was a bit confused about your article until I found out you actually play the console version of the game.

I play the PC version of the game, and as you probably already know our version has been patched ALOT more than your console version has (which isn't Valve's fault, its the stringent requirements Microsoft and Sony impose on updates to games on their system).

The demoman plays a little differently on the current PC version. He (along with the Soldier) recieved subsequent ammo nerfs in that their reserves were much smaller (the soldier can only fire 3 volleys for example before needing to find a source of ammo - can't give you exact numbers because patch notes aren't working for some reason atm). You can't afford to mindlessly waste ammo, and have to play more carefully. Coupled with the small nerf to the sticky launcher (there was a slight delay added to the time it took to detonate them) and you find that the more skilled demoman players value both weapons equally, as both perform admirably in their own suited situations.

I guess the fact that we can twitch-aim so much better on the PC version means that the default grenade launcher is subsequently easier to aim because we can set our desired trajectory in an instant.

The demoman used to be a dominant class along with the Soldier (and there was a time when the majority of an offensive force would be a mix of Soldiers and Demomen) but since they both recieved their subsequent nerfs (with the Soldier getting an additional one in the latest update by losing his 40% resistance to his own rockets unless he is rocket jumping) and are now balanced and fair classes.

You should really look into getting the PC version of TF2, its SOOOO much better.

Not sure if I know you, never seen you before, maybe you had a different name. Either way, first let me say thank you for pointing out scribefire. I had installed it once but never got around to trying it and this time I installed in on my portable Firefox and it's just what I needed to be able to blog from my job (perks of my job, ). I like using LiveWriter but am not able to install it on this PC, so this will definitely rock.

Now about your blogging, don't worry. When I first came here I was wrong more often than I could post. But I lived and I learned and now can live to blog another day. Just blog on and learn from your blogging. Look forward to your articles, this site was slow for a while and is getting back to its normal self little by little so bring on the articles.
